With all events and public performances cancelled this year due to Covid, we decided to work on a special project with our amazing Performance class students this term. The brief was to choreograph a performance piece for each group that was socially distanced and would be made into three individual dance performance films for our Youtube channel. Steven, Excel’s artistic director choreographed the younger piece ‘Rain On Me’ and the two older pieces ’Nobody’ and ‘Dancing In The Street’ was choreographed by our guest teacher, professional dancer and choreographer – Ben Rutter. Ben also makes a cameo appearance performing in his pieces alongside the students.
Over the course of this term the students have worked tirelessly on the choreography, even continuing rehearsals online at one point during the second lockdown. On filming day the students surpassed our expectations with their determination to make this a performance like no other. It is truly inspiring to see these amazing young people, whose education and lives have been greatly disrupted by Covid, work together so brilliantly as a team and produce these amazing performances.
